Story of an Hour.

One theme that I felt was prevalent in Chopin's story was relief. In the middle of the story when Mrs. Mallard went in the room after the shock of her husband's death, a feeling of relief fell over her. Although this should have been a moment of mourning and grief for her, she explains that she felt free. The theme of relief is apparent at the end of the story as well. When her husband returned home after everyone thought he died in the train accident she should have felt relieved. With a shocking twist, she died instead.

  1. I do agree that she should have felt relieved, but after going through all the emotion of finally feeling free, maybe it wasn't a bad thing. Maybe it was meant to be as weird as it sounds.

  2. What I gathered from this fiction is; Mrs Mallard was in an unhealthy marriage and didn't have the will-power to leave or couldn't leave, and although she was sad at first hearing the news. She suddenly realized that she was free without having to go through the motions. Hence.. why she felt a burst of joy and relieved.

  3. Louis felt relieved by grabbing her life into her own hands while feeling free. After her husbands arrival she dies of joy. This shows a twist in her character and they story.
